Havana, May 28 (RHC)-- El Salvador's President Salvador Sanchez described as successful his visit to Cuba, which included the signing of important accords aimed at consolidating bilateral commercial and cooperation relations.

Shortly before departing the Cuban capital, the Salvadoran president told the press gathered at Havana's International Airport that he held a long, fraternal and friendly conversation with Raul Castro, who updated him on the projects undertaken by the Cuban government.

“We addressed the accords reached by government working teams, which are very important for El Salvador because they allow working in areas crucial for social development, such as education, health and the environment,” Salvador Sanchez said.

The Salvadoran president also announced the signing of an accord with the Cuban Agriculture Ministry aimed at guaranteeing the Salvadoran people basic staples like corn, rice and beans. Another protocol announced by the head of state will allow the Salvadoran health system to directly purchase Cuban pharmaceuticals.

The Salvadoran head of state announced an upcoming visit to Havana by a government delegation to conclude some projects that are still to be addressed and he said that his three-day official visit was a success as it was his meeting with Raul, which he described as a “meeting of two brothers.”

“I consider him (Raul) and Fidel two comrades; we have always been in struggle together in different contexts and processes, with the vision that our countries are part of this humanity of Latin America.”

Cuba and El Salvador reestablished diplomatic relations in 2009 with the coming to power of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, headed by Mauricio Funes, whose presidential term concluded in 2014.

President Salvador Sanchez was seen off at Havana's Jose Marti International Airport last night by Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra.
