Tokyo, May 31 (RHC)-- Vice President Miguel Díaz-Canel began a four-day official visit to Japan on Tuesday.

On the first day of his visit, Díaz-Canel held talks with Keiji Furuya, chairman of the Japan-Cuba Friendship Parliamentary League and toured the Zojoji Temple --the largest Buddhist Temple in Tokyo.

The visit to Japan follows on the high-level political dialogue between the two countries. It focuses primarily on economic and trade relations. 

During his stay, Díaz-Canel will meet with senior government officials, as well as with representatives of the country's business sector.

In statements to reporters, the Cuban vice president said that Japan has an important role to play in Cuba's current trade dynamics. He recalled that Japan was Cuba's second largest trading partner in the 1970s and 80s. 

Díaz-Canel is accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra, and Cuba’s Ambassador to Japan Marcos Rodríguez Costa.
