Paris, June 10 (RHC)-- Cuba has renewed at UNESCO its commitment to the protection and preservation of cultural heritage.

Addressing the sixth session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, Gladys Collazo, President of the National Cultural Heritage Council spoke about Cuba’s experiences and achievements in the field.

Cuba has been appointed as a member of UNESCO's Inter-governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage for a four-year term.

Speaking about the Commission’s work in Cuba, Collazo noted that efforts to record and register popular festivals, customs and local traditions on the list of intangible cultural heritage of the nation will continue, noting that such actions constitute the first step in protecting Cuba’s heritage. Rumba and son music, repentismo, cigar factory readers, the parrandas (local parades in the central region) and the knowledge of Master rum makers are all included on the list of intangible cultural heritage of Cuba.
