Havana to host XIII Havana Course ‘Tropical and Travel Medicine 2020’

Cuba’s Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute is organizing the 13th Havana Course ‘Tropical and Travel Medicine 2020’, set for March 2nd through the 5th in Havana, in collaboration with the Medical Services for the Tropics (MST), in Maastricht, The Netherlands.

The course is intended for physicians (especially those working in general practice, occupational medicine, aviation, tropical medicine and and public health), pharmacists, microbiologists, nurses, and other health scientists.

Participants will learn about the latest advances and experiences on this relatively new multidisciplinary medical specialty, which emerged in response to the ever-growing itinerant population in today’s world.

The program includes roundtable discussions, lectures and master conferences by leading Cuban and foreign specialists on such issues as acute respiratory infections, arboviruses, hemorrhagic fever, Tuberculosis, Cholera, Typhoid Fever and fungal diseases. Participants in the course will be updated also on the latest knowledge and advances in the treatment of poliomyelitis, hepatitis, amoeba diseases, giardiasis and malaria.

They will also learned first hand about the Cuban program to control and treat HIV-AIDS. Included in the program also are visits to Cuban hospitals, research laboratories, and community health centers.

Cuba’s Pedro Kouri Institute (IPK) was founded in 1937. A Collaborating Center of the Pan-American Health Organization and the World Health organization (PAHO/WHO), it is a Center of Excellence in the field of tropical medicine and infectious disease.

The Havana-based Pedro Kouri Institute also offers professional training courses on medical microbiology and immunology, infectious diseases, epidemiology of communicable diseases and social research, among others.
