A U.S. court has given a green light to the controversial decision of President Donald Trump to expel hundreds of thousands of people who had found refuge in that country thanks to the Temporary Protected Status, TPS, conferred for humanitarian reasons.

The TPS is a mechanism created 30 years ago to allow undocumented immigrants who fled their countries due to wars, natural disasters or insecurity, to reside in the United States, where they were granted documents and the right to work.

But since Donald Trump arrived at the White House, he expressed his desire to end this program, alleging that the causes behind its creation no longer exist and its beneficiaries could return to their country.

A judge rejected these arguments and provided protection to migrants, but now the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit of California, made up of three magistrates, decided by two votes to one to agree with the government.

This means that at least 300,000 people and their families from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua and Sudan must leave the United States as of March 5th of next year.  Citizens of Honduras and Nepal will also join them.

The damages for withdrawing humanitarian protection to these people are very extensive, because the majority of them have lived in the U.S. for 20 or more years and have children born in the United States.  The will suffer uprooting or be separated from their parents to remain there.

It also affects hundreds of thousands of relatives who survive severe conditions of poverty thanks to remittances sent from the U.S.  On the other hand, the claim that violence and insecurity have disappeared in many migrant-sending nations is false, as can be seen on a daily basis in the news from El Salvador, Honduras or Haiti.

The American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU, of Southern California said it will appeal the court's verdict and, if necessary, take the case to the Supreme Court.

Another alternative is for Trump to lose in the presidential elections on November 3rd, and for Joe Biden, candidate for the Democratic party, to fulfill his promise to review the TPS and guarantee security of those under his protection.

If none of this works, there will be nothing left but the expulsion and perhaps the separation of many families, which would prove once again that the poor are not welcome in the so-called paradise of capitalism.
