Tenerife, May 31 (RHC)-- The awards ceremony of the 4th Ibero-American Animation Awards, also called Quirino Awards, paid tribute to Cuban cartoonist and filmmaker Juan Padrón. The ceremony was held in the Tenerife city of La Laguna, in Spain.
Silvia Padrón, daughter of Juan Padrón, participated as a guest. In his father’s honor, she received an honorary award.
‘My whole family, my mother, my brother, we are very happy with this recognition and we really appreciate that many doors are opening to carry out new projects,’ Silvia told Prensa Latina news agency.
She celebrated that film production entities in Cuba, Spain and elsewhere have plan new projects to honor and continue the vast legacy of Juan Padrón, creator of Ibero-American animation classics like Elpidio Valdés and Vampiros en La Habana (Vampires in Havana).
The jury of the 4th Quirino Awards evaluated works by cartoonists from Spain, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, Colombia and Costa Rica.
Located on the island of Tenerife, the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, was the new venue location of the Quirino Awards from this edition.
The awards are named after the creator of the first animated feature film in history, the Italian-Argentine Quirino Cristiani, who in 1917 directed "El Apostol"; an Argentine production in which 58,000 drawings made by hand and shot in 35 mm were used, in addition to several models representing public buildings and the streets of the city of Buenos Aires.
In addition to the awards ceremony, the Quirino brought together animation professionals for the Ibero-American Co-production and Business Forum.
