Latin America makes history in athletics at Tokyo Paralympics

Havana, September 3 (RHC)-- Nine Latin American countries have so far won medals at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, making history in the event in the Japanese capital.

In London-2012 and Atlanta-96, a total of 8 Latin American nations reached the podium, a figure that to date has remained the highest in a single Paralympic event, the group "team Vívela" points out on social networks.

Tokyo-2020 has seen Brazil, Cuba, Venezuela, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Argentina, Ecuador and Mexico win medals.

Of the 9 countries, the best performances correspond to Brazil (8-5-7), Cuba (3-1-1) and Venezuela (2-2-1).

So far, Latin America has 18 gold medals and with one more it would reach its best total in history. In Rio 2016 and London 2012, the region also won 18 gold medals.

On the most recent day, Mexico took the best part for Latin America, winning two bronze medals with Rebeca Valenzuela (shot put category F12) and Leonardo de Jesús Pérez, in the 100 meters in category T52.
