Five Cubans will participate in the World Canoeing Championship
Havana, September 7 (RHC)-- Olympic champions Serguey Torres and Fernando Dayán Jorge lead the five Cubans who will participate in the World Canoeing Championships, to be held from September 16 to 19 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
They will accompany the 1,000-meter C-2 champions of Tokyo, José Ramón Pelier and the women Yarisleidis Cirilo and Katherin Nuevo, who were also in the Japanese capital.
Alejandro Hanse, national commissioner of this sport, told Radio Rebelde that Dayán will be in the individual 5 thousand meters and will also accompany Serguey in the 1,000 and 500 meters. "The issue of the C-2 at 500 meters has to do with the fact that it should be the fundamental distance for us in the upcoming Olympic Games, since the 1,000 should not be called."
Hanse pointed out that Pelier will paddle the C-1 at 500 and 1,000 meters, while Cirilo will paddle in the single-seater canoe at 200 and 5,000 meters and will pair up with Nuevo in the C-2 at 200 and 500 meters.
Alejandro Hanse said that the 19 and 18 year old girls, Yarisleidis Cirilo and Katherin Nuevo, have a bright future in the two-seater canoe. "We think they can be among the top 5, especially in some of the C-2 events. With them we have our sights set on being able to fight for a medal in the next Olympics."
Cuban canoeing received after the end of the Tokyo Games 13 boats, which will help the preparation of these athletes, especially in the current Olympic cycle that will end in 2024 in Paris. "We had the possibility of being donated the 7 boats with which we competed and also INDER bought another 6. This is undoubtedly an injection for the canoe that will pay off with results in the immediate future."
The canoeists of our country assume the challenge of seeking a medal in this important event, after winning the title in the C-2 to 1,000 meters in the Olympic Games in a regatta that paralyzed the whole of Cuba for a little more than three minutes.
