Havana, May 12 (JIT) -- Another outstanding performance was achieved by Cuban Arlenis Sierra, from the Movistar team, finishing eighth in the individual general classification of the Vuelta al País Vasco 2024, an event on the world circuit of the International Cycling Union.
In the third and final stage, run over 114.9 kilometers, the manzanillera arrived in the main group of 36 runners, 44 seconds behind the Dutch Demi Vollering (SD Worx), winner of the stage with 3:03.34 hours and absolute leader of this prestigious road race.
Arlenis managed to stay in the top ten overall thanks to the fact that he quickly recovered from a fall less than two kilometers from the finish line, which caused bruises on his shoulder and other parts of his body, but without major consequences, according to the report published by the management of the Movistar team on the internet social network profiles.
Her partner, the Canadian Olivia Baril, slipped into fourth place this Sunday in the sprint displayed by the leading group. She thus placed herself in sixth position in the overall ranking, to which she added a third place in the points classification, in which Arlenis finished seventh.
The last stage, sometimes accompanied by heavy rain, was characterized by tough elevations such as those located in Jaizkibel, Gurutze and Mendizorrotz.
The most demanding point of the latter - about 30 km from the closure - was the Murgil wall, 4.1 km long at a 7.3 percent gradient, although with sections of up to a 20 percent slope.
On the final day, the Movistar sextet rose to fourth place among 20 teams, led by SD Worx, Liv Jayco and Lidl-Trek, in that order.
Like the majority of the platoon of more than a hundred women who cheered on the event, Arlenis will continue her commitments for the season in preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
