Lula in Minas Gerais

Minas Gerais, October 31 (RHC)-- “I learned not to give up. We are going to bring democracy back to the country, "said former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during the closing of his caravan through the state Minas Gerais, in southeastern Brazil.

"The right of this country, when it knows it has no capacity to win elections, tries to destroy its adversaries," said the leader of the Workers' Party (PT) in remarks quoted by TeleSur.

"I am worried because they are destroying our country. We work days and nights to create a social policy and this government is destroying it, "he added.

Lula also expressed concern about the neoliberal policies implemented by the de facto government and questioned the proposed constitutional amendment (PEC 55) that seeks to freeze for a 20-year period investments in fundamental rights such as education, health and housing.

"The Brazilian elite never cared to educate the people because their children could go to Europe to study. With the proposed amendment they want to thwart the future of Brazil, "he said

The Caravan of Lula in Minas Gerais wound up Monday after an intense week where it was welcomed by a crowd.

A poll published on Sunday revealed that if the presidential elections in Brazil were held today, Lula would win in the first round with a 20-point advantage over his closest rival.
