Santa Fe, April 9 (RHC)-- In the U.S., New Mexico’s governor has signed a bill abolishing Columbus Day -- and replacing it with Indigenous Peoples’ Day -- on the second Monday in October.
New Mexico joins the U.S. states of Alaska, Minnesota, Vermont, Oregon, South Dakota and Hawaii in honoring indigenous peoples with a holiday.
Meanwhile, more than 50 cities across the U.S. have also voted to stop honoring Columbus, an Italian explorer who massacred and enslaved Arawak indigenous people and opened the door to the European colonization of the Americas.
