Baghdad, May 6 (RHC)-- Iraqi security and hospital officials say at least eight people have been killed in separate bomb attacks and shooting incidents across the country.
Early on Tuesday, unidentified militants stormed a security checkpoint in the town of al-Amriyah, which is located 263 kilometers west of the capital Baghdad, sparking clashes. Doctor Ahmed Shami said three children and a woman were killed in the exchange of fire, while 15 others sustained gunshot wounds.
Elsewhere, a roadside bomb exploded near an army patrol in Abu Ghraib city, situated 32 kilometers west of Baghdad, killing at least one soldier and wounding three others. Three soldiers were also killed and six more injured when an explosion ripped through the city of Jurf al-Sakhar, located about 60 kilometers southwest of Baghdad, on Tuesday.
Iraq is currently witnessing a wave of violence unprecedented in recent years. Official figures show that more than 1,000 people, mostly civilians, were killed and nearly 1,400 others wounded in violent attacks across Iraq in April. More than 3,000 people have been killed already this year, according to an AFP tally based on security and medical reports.
