Miami, June 8 (RHC)-- In the U.S. state of Florida, the Department of Health has confirmed 1,180 additional cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s total to nearly 64,000 known cases. Florida now has a total of 63,938 confirmed cases.
This is the fifth day this week that the state’s daily total of newly confirmed cases surpassed 1,000, though it is the lowest total seen since the state reported 617 additional cases on Tuesday. On Thursday, the state recorded 1,413 additional cases, the highest daily count since Florida’s Department of Health began providing daily updates on the novel coronavirus in March.
The novel coronavirus has killed more than 110,000 people in the US, according to Johns Hopkins University data, as nationwide protests against racial injustice spark fears of a resurgence of the virus.
Total U.S. coronavirus cases are approaching two million, the highest in the world followed by Brazil with about 672,000 cases and Russia with about 467,000.
Several southern U.S. states reported sharp increases in COVID-19 infections, with Alabama, South Carolina and Virginia all seeing new cases rise.
