The latest report from the Ministry of Health registers almost 30 deaths as a result of the repression against the protests

Lima, December 22 (RHC)-- Sectors of the Peruvian population have continued the mobilizations to demand the closure of the Congress, the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the release of Pedro Castillo and a Constituent Assembly.   In Lima, the capital, demonstrators reiterated their indignation for the situation in the country and demanded the restitution of Castillo to the Presidency, ratifying that they do not want the authorities of the Congress to remain until 2024, but new elections must be held next year.

It was reported by the Peruvian Ministry of Health that the number of deaths as a consequence of the repression by the security forces against the protests rose to 27.

In the regions of Cajamarca, Ica, Cusco, Lambayeque and Arequipa, protesters have reiterated that they will continue with peaceful mobilizations against Congress, for new elections and a new Constitution.  They also expressed their rejection to the swearing in of Alberto Otárola as the new president of the Council of Ministers, who had been serving as Minister of Defense.

The day before, the plenary session of the Peruvian Congress approved the bill proposing to bring forward the general elections to April 2024, which must pass through a second vote in the next ordinary legislature.   Protesters say that is not enough and are demanding that elections be held next year, in 2023.
