In April 2019, during the government of Mauricio Macri, Argentina announced in an official statement its decision to withdraw from Unasur
Havana, April 7 (RHC) Argentinian Minister of Foreign Affairs Santiago Cafiero confirmed on Thursday the return of his country to the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) as a member state, by order of President Alberto Fernández.
“By sovereign decision, Argentina returns to Unasur as a member state to promote its institutional revitalization and build an increasingly integrated region”, the foreign minister said through his Twitter account. He pointed out that all the foreign ministers of the countries that are part of the bloc were notified of this decision.
In a communication shared by the foreign minister, he stressed that Argentina's return to Unasur "adds to the country an integrating option that is not exclusive of any other.
The text reaffirms the position of the South American nation regarding the importance of regional integration blocks, especially "in times when the planet shows serious signs of fragmentation and instability."
