Foreign ministers of Ethiopia and India discuss issues of common interest

Havana, April 13 (RHC) - Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen today received Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to discuss issues of common concern.

Mekonnen thanked his Indian counterpart for New Delhi's unreserved support in the UN Security Council in relation to the conflict in the Tigray region (north) and the file of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

The Ethipian minister addressed the implementation process of the Pretoria Peace Agreement, signed on November 2 in South Africa, which put an end to the clashes between government troops and the Tigray People's Liberation Front. It established the resumption of humanitarian support and basic services in the affected areas.

Similarly, he exposed the ongoing activities of the National Dialogue Commission with the aim of identifying the root causes of contentious issues that can lead to conflicts and crises in the country. He also stressed the need for partners like India to take positive action on debt restructuring requests from developing countries.

Jaishankar, for his part, said that the India-Africa Forum Summit, suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will be held this year with thematic areas that fit the interests of developing countries, including the health and digital sectors.

The two sides also discussed the Asian nation's bid to run for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2028-2029. (Source: Prensa Latina)
