Chiapas, January 2 (teleSUR-RHC)-- In a moving ceremony held during the commemoration of the anniversary of the 1994 uprising, members of the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN for its acronym in Spanish) confirmed their support for the parents of the forcibly disappeared 43 students from the Ayotzinapa teachers' training college.
Parents and classmates of the missing students were invited to the commemoration events held in Oventic, Chiapas. Sub-commander Moses, who often acts as a spokesperson for the EZLN, invited the members of the committee of family members of the missing students and hugged each one.
A group of 43 masked Zapatistas, as members of the EZLN are called, then went on stage and embraced a member of the committee while the names of the forcibly disappeared students were read aloud.
The attendees heard from several parents of the missing students, who expressed their gratitude to the EZLN for their support. The Zapatistas have been supporting the demands of the parents for the safe return of their children. Several rallies have been organized in Chiapas, Mexico's poorest state. At these rallies, many Zapatistas held signs affirming that the parents were “not alone” in their struggle.
“The Zapatistas believe that we cannot trust bad governments anymore, they are the servants of capital, stewards of big capitalist business,” said Moses. “The one calling the shots is global capitalism, that is why we cannot believe them.”
He called the struggle of the parents an inspiration to those who want truth and justice.
A representative from the National Indigenous Congress also spoke and affirmed the support of his organization. Many of the disappeared students come from Indigenous communities in Guerrero.
