Damascus, October 13 (RHC)-- Two rockets hit the Russian embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus Tuesday as many had gathered in front of the building to show support for the Russian airstrikes, the French news agency AFP reported.

An AFP photographer said that it was not yet clear if anyone had been injured or killed, however, more than 300 people were running for their lives as the rockets struck the embassy.  The demonstrators had been waving Russian flags and holding up large photographs of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Two mortar rounds hit the Russian Embassy compound in Damascus.  Employees at the diplomatic mission were not hurt," an embassy employee told a Russian paper.

The attack comes after after al-Qaida's branch in Syria, al-Nusra, called for retaliation against the Russian airstrikes and the Syrian government.  With Moscow's help, the Syrian army has been regaining ground from the Islamic State group and al-Nusra.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said the rockets were fired from the eastern edges of the capital, where rebels are maintaining some ground.
