Havana, March 5 (RHC)-- The symposium Clinical Aspects of Parkinson's Disease and Cerebellar Ataxia stands out in the scientific agenda of the 4th International Conference on Neurological Restoration, which will begin today in the Cuban capital.

Doctor of Sciences Luis Velazquez, Director of the Center for Research and Rehabilitation from Hereditary Ataxia, located in the Cuban eastern province of Holguin -- where the largest number of Cuban patients at risk of suffering from that disease live –- stated: "It is a project, whose final objective is to seek new therapeutic targets to counteract progression or degeneration of motor functions in early stages and that would be applicable to other forms of spinocerebellar ataxia, which share similar mechanisms”.

The event, which began today at Havana's Convention Center and will run until Friday, March 7th, is part of the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the International Center for Neurological Restoration, CIREN, said Doctor Emilio Villa, director of the institution.

Other subjects that will be discussed are neuroplasticity and neurorehabilitation, research on stem cells, neurological restoration in neurodegenerative diseases, spinal chord injuries, epilepsy, dementia, surgeries for movement disorders, neurology and restorative neurosurgery.
