Havana, June 25 (RHC)— The future and development of the world postal service is the focus of three international events underway in the Cuban capital this week with the presence the Director General of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), Bishar A. Hussein.

The Forum on Regional Strategies for the Caribbean is running from June 24 and 25 for an update of global and regional trends affecting the sector and the discussion of  new initiatives and opportunities for collaboration.

The meeting will be followed by the 22nd Annual Conference of the Caribbean Postal Union (CPU) and the Business Growth Forum, addressing issues related to regulations and proposals related to remuneration issues.

Speaking on Monday, in representation of the country hosting the events, the Cuban Communications minister Jorge Luis Perdomo, explained that the island is working to modernize its mail services despite the US economic, financial and commercial blockade.

Perdomo reiterated that Cuba is proud to contribute to the exchange of ideas in the postal sector, and stressed the importance of the strategic forum of the Universal Postal Union for the Caribbean, which is meeting for the first time in Havana.

The Secretary General of the Caribbean Postal Union, Guillermo Raymond, said that our presence in this forum shows the seriousness and responsibility of Caribbean nations to share experiences on issues such as postal infrastructure and improvement of services.

The UPU, founded in 1874, is UN-affiliated and one of the oldest international multilateral organizations. It has 192 member countries, is headquartered in Bern, Switzerland.

Its main function is to advise, mediate and provide technical assistance, as well as to establish the rules for the international exchange of mail.

For its part, the CPU, created in 1997, gathers 30 nations of the area to monitor the development, modernization and improvement of postal services in the region.
