Havana, April 19 (RHC)-- Prominent Cuban diplomat Abelardo Moreno Fernández passed away in this capital in the early hours of Saturday morning at the age of 80.
Abelardo began his work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in July 1961 as a specialist. He had an outstanding and distinguished career in Revolutionary Diplomacy, holding various positions in domestic and foreign affairs until being appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2000, a position he held until January 2019.
During his long and fruitful diplomatic career, he served on permanent missions representing Cuba to international organizations based in Geneva and to the United Nations in New York, serving as Ambassador and Permanent Representative at the latter.
He worthily represented Cuba at countless international meetings and led complex negotiation processes, earning recognition and respect from his colleagues and colleagues around the world. His contributions to the success of the 14th NAM Summit in 2006 and the 2nd CELAC Summit in 2014, as well as his presidencies of these important mechanisms, are notable. These contributions contributed to Cuba's international projection and its leadership at the global and regional levels.
A mentor to several generations of Cuban diplomats, he holds an honorary doctorate from the Raúl Roa García Higher Institute of International Relations, where he was a visiting professor. He published books and articles on various topics in international relations, including "International Negotiation: The Art and Science of the Negotiation Process" (2021) and "The Non-Aligned Movement. Foundations, History, and Identity. Cuban Vision" (2023).
For his merits and contributions to the foreign policy of the Cuban Revolution, he was nominated for the first-degree "Lázaro Peña" Order.
At the time of his death, Abelardo was working as an Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
