Great solidarity among Cubans

By María Josefina Arce.

The solidarity that is always present among Cubans has increased in recent days in the face of the difficult situation in the eastern part of the country, especially in the province of Guantánamo, following the recent passage of hurricane Oscar, which unfortunately caused loss of life and considerable material damage.

As usual in complex situations, civil society organizations have mobilized to bring aid to the victims and to provide whatever assistance is needed.

And the youth are always at the forefront. The UJC, the Communist Youth Union, called for the formation of brigades to support the government's efforts to help any citizen in need.

Other youth organizations, such as the Federación de Estudiantes Universitarios (Federation of University Students or FEU), and the Asociación Hermanos Saiz, which brings together young artists, have spoken out in the same vein.

The CDR or Comitees for the Defense of the Revolution, the Federation of Cuban Women, and the Union of Cuban Workers, have joined this growing solidarity from the outset.

In the same way, many citizens, spontaneously and through social networks, have called on people to join forces and contribute what they can to alleviate the hardships suffered by our compatriots as a result of the hurricane's devastating passage.

This is not the first time that Cubans have demonstrated the spirit of solidarity that has always characterized them.

When the tornado hit Havana in 2019, the victims received help not only from the rest of the inhabitants of the capital, but from the whole country.

The response of the citizens after the explosion in May 2022 at the Saratoga Hotel in Havana was impressive. There were many who came to donate blood and others who in one way or another supported the work of the rescuers.

And in September 2022, in the western province of Pinar del Río, in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, the help of an entire people would also reach the many victims.

In the face of every difficult situation the country has faced due to weather events or accidents, there have been countless gestures of solidarity and love among Cubans, which speak volumes about the greatness of a people.
