Cuba promotes circular economy

By: María Josefina Arce.

The circular economy is gaining ground in the world, a model with a different approach to the current one, committed to responsible and sustainable economic growth.

According to experts, the current economic model is wasteful, extractive and causes the depletion of natural resources, pollution and climate change.

The circular economy, on the other hand, offers a different vision of production and consumption that focuses on optimizing resources and minimizing waste.

Cuba is also trying to develop this alternative, in which the waste generated by a given economic activity can be used as a raw material for other industries.

In this regard, Cuban President Miguel Díaz Canel has emphasized the need to maximize this model and take it to the entire nation, where the first steps have been taken.

However, new initiatives are being sought to be incorporated into this model. Thus, the authorities in Havana have invited the economic actors of the province to present proposals that contribute to the management of the paper and cardboard value chain, taking into account the principles of the circular economy.

The call for applications will be open until early next year and is open to micro, medium and small enterprises, agricultural and non-agricultural cooperatives and self-employed workers.

Those selected will have access to training spaces, technical assistance and the acquisition of inputs and equipment necessary for the development of their projects.

"Towards a circular economy in Havana" is supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.

The country already has a national strategy that includes the circular economy in its legal and regulatory base. The Natural Resources and Environment System Law includes this topic in one of its regulations.

It is undoubtedly a challenge for Cuba, but it will contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and therefore to the well-being of its citizens.
