María de los Angeles Santana
Havana, August 2 (RHC)-- August 2nd, 2021, also marked the 107th birthday anniversary of Cuban actress and singer María de los Angeles Santana.
Born in Havana, on August 2nd, 1914, she began her prolific career in the 1930s when she was hired by Peliculas Cubanas S.A. to participate in the 1938 film ‘Romance del Palmar’ directed by filmmaker Ramon Peon Garcia.
In the following years, she participated in ‘Mi tia de America’, ‘Estampas habaneras’ and Cancionero cubano.’
She also excelled in radio and television, starring comedy and drama shows alike. She played one of the leading roles in the TV comedy shows ‘San Nicolas del Peladero’, for almost 24 years, and also in ‘Los abuelos se rebelan.’
Also remarkable was her lyrical work accompanying, maestro Ernesto Lecuona on many occasions.
In theatre, she starred in such memorable pieces as ‘Cecilia Valdes’, ‘La verbena de la paloma’, and ‘Una casa colonial.’
Maria de los Angeles Santana was awarded both Cuba’s National Theater and Television Prizes in 2001 and 2003, respectively.
She died on February 8th, 2011, in Havana, at the age of 96.
