The 1997 recipient of José Martí National Journalism Award and winner of the 2006 Alejo Carpentier Prize, Rojas was born in Santiago de Cuba on May 17, 1928, and studied journalism in Havana.
Shortly after graduating, she was an exceptional witness to the July 26, 1953, assault on the Moncada Garrison in Santiago de Cuba led by Fidel Castro. The recent graduate meticulously recorded this event and the trial.
After the triumph of the Revolution, she continued working in Bohemia magazine, and shortly after, she joined the team of journalists of the newspaper Revolución. Then she joined the team of Granma since its creation on October 3, 1965.
