Poets and trova musicians are participating in a cultural event called ‘Estrofa Nueva’, as tribute to José Martí on his 169th anniversary this January 28th.

Hosted by the provincial headquarters of the National Association of Writers and Artists UNESC in Ciego de Ávila, the program includes poetry readings, exhibitions, trova music recital and conferences on José Martí’s life and work.

Highlights of this year’s 18th edition of Estrofa Nueva include the exhibition entitled ‘El Hombre de la Edad de Oro’, by artist and writer Yasmany Rodríguez Alfaro. The title of the exhibition paraphrases the title of an iconic children’s book written by Martí ‘The Golden Age.’

Other highlights are a conference by journalist Luis Raúl Vásquez on ‘El Diablo Cojuelo’ and other early journalistic writings by José Martí as a teenager, an another conference by filmmaker José Ángel Guevara on Martí’s presence in film –a look at documentaries and films by Cuban and foreign creators about the Cuban hero.

‘Estrofa Nueva’ is the title of one of the poems written by José Martí, considered the pioneer of modernism in Ibero-America.
