Havana, May 8 (RHC)-- When the centennial of Cuban writer and humorist Enrique Núñez Rodríguez (1923-2002) is commemorated on May 13, several activities will evoke this author who to this day provokes laughter for the genius of his texts.

The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac) will open its doors on May 12 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the creator of popular Cuban radio and television programs, who collaborated continuously with Bohemia magazine and Juventud Rebelde newspaper.

The tribute by Uneac, organization of which he was vice president, is part of the calendar of activities that will take place in Havana and in his native Quemado de Güines, Villa Clara province.

Remembered for his authentic sense of humor, Núñez Rodríguez gave prestige with his pen to the collection of the best Cuban vernacular theater and among his plays stand out Dios te salve comisario, Voy abajo, El bravo, La sirvienta, and Sí, señor juez.

From his hands and wit were born television series such as Si no fuera por mamá, Conflictos and Casos y cosas de casa, as well as the books Oye como lo cogieron, Yo vendí mi bicicleta and Mi vida al desnudo.

For his contributions to the world of literature, he received numerous awards, including three National Awards, the José Martí Journalism Award in 2001, the Humor Award in the same year and the Radio Award in 2002.

His extensive work reflects his aphorism: humor serves to tell the greatest truths of the world, to make people laugh without offending and above all to criticize without vulgarity.
