Act of Librarians in Santiago de Cuba

Santiago de Cuba, June 7 (RHC)-- Librarians of Santiago de Cuba today reaffirmed their commitment to the defense and safeguarding of the national heritage, in a ceremony held at the Elvira Cape Provincial Library, in this city, on the occasion of the celebration of their day this June 7.

Giraldo Setién, director of the entity, highlighted the performance of these institutions in the education and increase of the cultural level of the people, as well as the social mission of the members of the Cuban Association of Librarians (Ascubi).

He referred to the role of knowledge professionals to diligently and agilely adapt services to the era of computerization and digitization and provide better service to users.

For her part, Aranelis Barbán, head of the Ideological Department of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), highlighted the work carried out by librarians in the promotion of reading and the spiritual growth of citizens.

He also urged to defend the idiosyncrasy and the national bibliographic heritage, to fight against the banal and to conquer new scientific and institutional results in the year of the 70th anniversary of the assault to the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Barracks.

On the occasion, the provincial awards Eduardo Luis Delgado Pérez and Inés de la Caridad Bravo Aragón were given to two and six librarians, respectively, and the national librarianship award for life's work to Miriam de los Ángeles Morales Villalón.

Similarly, the national José Antonio Ramos award in the area of research was granted to Annia Rojas, the Olinta Ariosa award for school librarians to Ana María López, and four Antonio Bachiller y Morales distinctions.

The event was headed by members of the Central Committee of the PCC José Ramón Monteagudo, First Secretary of the political organization in the southeastern territory, and Beatriz Johnson, the governor, and also attended by executives of Culture and the Central de Trabajadores de Cuba.

The Cuban Librarian's Day is celebrated in honor of the outstanding historian, university professor and journalist Antonio Bachiller y Morales, considered the father of the national bibliography. (Source:ACN)
