Havana’s Grand Theater will reopen its doors to the public on January 1st with a Gala titled Classical Triptych to mark the 57th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

Following a three- year renovation, Havana’s Grand Theater will feature the performance of the Cuban National Ballet Company, directed by ballet legend, Alicia Alonso, after whom the famous theater was renamed by the Cuban Council of States in September. The gala includes Giselle Act I, Swan Lake Act II and Coppelia Act III.

The theater is one of the oldest such institutions in Latin America: it opened in 1838 as Tacón Theater and later reopened as Havana’s Galician Center. Important art celebrities have performed on its stage, including ballerinas, Fanny Elssler and Ana Pávlova; actresses Sara Bernhardt and Eleonora Duse; singers Enrico Caruso and Titta Rufo and French mime Marcel Marceau. Cuba’s Ignacio Cervantes, José White, Ernesto Lecuona, Alicia Alonso and Rita Montaner also performed in the famous theater. As of 1960, it’s been the venue of Havana’s International Ballet Festival, one of the most important dance events in Latin America.
