Havana, October 25 (RHC)-- Cuban fighter Osvel Caballero opened with a victory on Monday Cuba's participation in the XXI International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Championship, organized by Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, until November 6.
The Antillean 57-kilogram representative dominated without complications his bout against the Azerbaijani Umid Rustamov, whom he defeated by unanimous decision of the judges 5-0 (30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28).
Debutant in these fights, Caballero is the first Cuban to see action in the Serbian appointment of the eight exponents that make up the squad led by the Olympic titleholders of 'Tokyo 2020', Andy Cruz (63.5 kg), Roniel Iglesias (71 kg) and Julio Cesar La Cruz (92 kg).
This Monday, another World Championship rookie, the middleweight Kevin Brown (67 kg), will also take the floor at the Stark Arena against the Jamaican Joshua Frazer.
The tournament in Serbia will award cash prizes for the first time, and gathers more than 600 exponents from 104 countries, who will fight in preliminary bouts until November 2, with a day of semifinals on November 4, and two dates to define the gold, on November 5 and 6.
Cuban pugilists will try to improve the harvest of three awards of the 2019 Ekaterinburg competition, on their way to increase the historical total of 77 gold, 35 silver and 26 bronze medals.
