Cuban Olympic Committee regrets boycott of Beijing 2022 Winter Games

Havana, December 11 (RHC)-- The Cuban Olympic Committee (COC) regretted the boycott of the Winter Olympic Games to be held in Beijing, China, next year, for strictly political reasons that have nothing to do with sports.

In a letter sent to the JIT sports publication, the COC regrets the decision of several Western countries not to send diplomatic personnel to the event, which only affects their own delegations and the spirit of brotherhood and fraternity of the event.

The Olympic movement was able to overcome similar events in the relatively recent past, lessons that should serve to preserve the message of peace and the supreme objectives of the Olympic Games under the five rings, as well as the Olympic values, the communiqué points out.

It also recalls the success of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and highlights the efforts made by the Chinese in the organization of the next Games, especially in times of the HIV/AIDS-19 pandemic.

Even though Cuba does not participate in these competitions, the COC expresses its hope for the success of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and also that the use of sporting events as platforms of denunciation and pressure for political aspects ceases once and for all.

"We exhort from the COC to all the National Olympic Committees of the world to unite under the Winter and Summer Olympic Games for peace, solidarity and friendship that we put into practice during each sporting confrontation, and may the best triumph so that their names, feats and countries remain forever in the Olympus of universal history."

Finally, this entity expresses its confidence in the role of the International Olympic Committee in this regard, and in the value of recent discussions on how Olympism should address the social and political environment in which it operates, both inside and outside the Games.
