Canelo Alvarez
Havana, December 14 (PL)-- Mexican boxer Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez obtained his first endorsement in the Prensa Latina poll to select the best athletes in Latin America in 2021, by receiving the vote of Diario Uno, from Peru.
Álvarez, who managed to unify the super middleweight world championships this year, received the support in the category of best male athlete.
In this section, the quadruple Olympic champion in the super heavyweight division of Greco-Roman wrestling, Cuban Mijaín López, leads the poll with 35 votes.
For best female athlete, the South American newspaper chose Venezuelan triple jumper Yulimar Rojas, who now has 52 votes and leads the poll.
Rojas won the Olympic crown at the Tokyo 2020 Games with a world record of 15.67 meters and is escorted by Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah, owner of six ballots.
For best team of the year, the Peruvian newspaper chose the men's soccer team of Brazil, Olympic title holder, which has six votes.
Argentina's men's soccer team, winner of the Copa América in Brazil, leads the section with 30 votes, well ahead of the Cuban canoeing team, champions of the 1,000-meter C-2 in Tokyo 2020, which has 12.
After the pause in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Prensa Latina launched last November 8 another edition of its Sports Poll to select the main exponents of Latin America and the Caribbean in 2021.
The votes of the different media -radio, television, written and digital press- can be sent (never personally) to the following e-mail address: deportes@prensa-latina.cu.
