U.S. hurdler McLaughlin's world record highlighted

Havana, July 23 (RHC)-- The world governing body of athletics (World Athletics) today highlighted on its website the world record set by U.S. hurdler Sydney McLaughlin in the 400-meter hurdles, an event in which she clocked 50.68 seconds.

McLaughlin took the lead in the final of the World Championships in Oregon, United States, to win her first world crown.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist beat her previous best (51.41) by more than seven tenths of a second, set in this same venue on June 25 in the U.S. qualifying trials for the world championships.

The silver medal went to the Dutch Femke Bol with a time of 52.27 seconds and the bronze to the American Dalilah Muhammad, who defended the title of the Doha-2019 World Championship (53.13).

In another event, Dominican Marileidy Paulino won the runner-up in the 400 meters, her second medal in the event after the gold in the mixed relay, while Shaunae Miller-Uibo of Bahamas was proclaimed world champion for the first time.

Miller-Uibo, double Olympic champion, won the race with a time of 49.11 seconds, ahead of Paulino, who finished with 49.60, and Barbadian Sada Williams (49.75).

The Quisqueyana, who finished second behind Miller-Uibo in Tokyo-2020, was aiming for revenge on the Bahamian in Eugene in a season in which she was undefeated in 400m races and had the best time of the year.

In an intense week, in which she competed in five 400m events (two mixed relay events and three individual events), Paulino confirmed herself as one of the greatest figures of Latin American athletics, which as a region has five gold medals and a silver medal in this World Championship.

The American Michael Norman finally realized his potential by winning the 400 meters crown at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene (United States) in a close race in which Grenada's Kirani James won the silver medal.

Norman crossed the finish line with a time of 44.29 seconds while James, a three-time Olympic medalist, had to settle for 44.48. The bronze went to Great Britain's Matthew Hudson-Smith (44.66).

Australia's Kelsey-Lee Barber retained the javelin title with a throw of 66.91 meters, the best mark of the year.

Second place went to American veteran Kara Winger with a final throw of 64.05 meters and third place to Japan's Haruka Kitaguchi (63.27).
