Havana, June 16 (JIT) - Cuba lost to Spain in the men's recurve team event at the Medellin 2023 Archery World Cup in Medellin, Colombia.
Hugo Franco, Juan José Santiesteban and Javier Vega bowed out in the first round with a 4-5 score to a team formed by Daniel Castro, Yun Sánchez and Javier Mérida, who could not overcome their round of 16 match against Taipei of China.
Coach Reyter Téllez considered that in spite of the setback, the level shown by his students has grown with respect to previous incursions in these competitions, in which the Iberians have more experience.
He compared the performance shown with what happened a year ago in the same venue and valued as remarkable the improvement in terms of projection and safety in each round of shooting.
The strategist also recalled that the objective was to complete the preparation for the imminent Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador 2023, which together with the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile at the end of the year are the main competitive commitments.
The semifinals of the event will have as protagonists the teams of South Korea against India and China against Taipei.
In the women's collective event there was no presence of the Island, which on Friday will depend on Maydenia Sarduy in the crossing of the individual modality.
The matancera accumulated 616 points in the order defined with the double 70-meter lap and will open with a very complicated match against South Korea's Chae Young Kang.
Of the men, only Hugo and Juan José were able to advance to the main draw of 64 competitors. In that stage, the former will face Nicholas D'Amour, from the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the other will face South Korea's Woo Seok Lee.
None of them will be the favorite to overcome this battle, but for Hugo it will be an appreciable opportunity to face one of his main rivals in San Salvador 2023.
This Friday there will also be mixed team competitions, in which Maydenia and Hugo will debut against the French Anaelle Florent and Romain Fichet.
