Havana, February 7 (ACN)-- Cuban Luis Enrique Zayas won the high jump meeting in Udine, Italy, with Challenger category of the World Athletics Indoor Tour, in his debut in the winter tour of athletics in 2024.

Zayas, several times world finalist and two-time Pan American champion, dominated the competition with a mark of 2.26 meters, and with the victory already assured, he would fail on two occasions over 2.30, in search of the meeting record.

Mexico's Roberto Vilches (2.21 m) took second place, and third place went to Ukraine's Andrey Protzenko (2.18 m).

Among the luxury guests at the indoor competition was Cuba's Javier Sotomayor, world record holder in this specialty with 2.45 m and considered the best high jumper in history.

His son Jaxier, 16 years old, competed again in Udine, and achieved a record of 1.95 m, before failing three times the 2.00 m, in search of his personal best.

Meanwhile, Cuban triple jumpers Lázaro Martínez and Cristian Nápoles finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Orlen Copernicus Cup in Torun, Poland, a gold category event of the World Athletics Indoor Tour.
