Havana, June 5 (ACN)-- World Athletics (WA), governing body of world athletics, announced that each season starting in 2026 it will have a competition at the highest level, in which the best exponents of the year could participate, including champions of the world and Olympic.

This event will be named World Athletics Ultimate Championship, and is part of the ideas outlined in the recently announced commercial strategy that will mark the organization's destinies until 2027.

The new competition, which will take place every two years – when there are no World Cups on the calendar – will have its first edition between November 11 and 13, 2026 in the city of Budapest, Hungary.

The successful organization of the 2023 World Athletics Championships in the Hungarian capital influenced the choice of the first venue for the nascent tournament.

For the occasion, WA has reserved a record prize pool, consisting of 10 million dollars, to be distributed among its participants, although the highest figure will be 150 thousand, destined for the winners.

According to reports, the contest program will take place over three nights with actions that will last less than three hours, in which the best athletes in each specialty will be presented throughout the season.

In the track events, semifinals will be held with the best 16 runners in the world ranking to define the candidates for the title, while in the field events, direct finals will be held with the occupants of the first eight positions in that ranking, WA assured.

It was also established that the athletes who take part in the competition will do so representing their nations, because in this way it is guaranteed that individual success is backed by national pride.

Referring to this new competition, the British Sebastian Coe, president of WA, said that the World Athletics Ultimate Championship will be full of action and excitement for fans and will set a new standard for athletics events.

Coe, gold medalist at the 1980 Moscow and 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, explained that the presence of the most important athletics stars will make this event a benchmark for sports competitions in the world.
