Cuba (2) - Belize (0)

Havana, Aug 16 (JIT) - The Cuban women's national soccer team won Thursday the first of two friendly matches against Belize, with a score of 2-0.

In the match held at the Pedro Marrero stadium in the capital, the locals imposed their tactics and dominated without setbacks.

Eunises Núñez opened the account at the 36th minute, and one minute later, Indira Hechavarría from Santiago put the final score on the scoreboard.

Key to the victory was the excellent defense shown by a backline in which captain Yurisleidy Mena stood out, fully recovered from an injury that kept her inactive, which allowed her to keep a clean sheet.

“It's a very important match for us, because the opponent plays in the B level of the CONCACAF Nations League, and we can evaluate the quality of the teams competing at that level,” Cuban coach Elizabeth Cuff told JIT.

“The result was favorable and we are satisfied with what we saw on the field, despite the strong heat. The performance shows us what kind of shape we are in and indicates what we need to work on,” she added.

For his part, the technical director of the Belizeans, Wayne Casimiro, praised the performance of the Cubans and pointed out concentration errors of his players, which, in his opinion, explains the defeat.

The second match between the two teams will take place on Sunday 18 at 5:00 p.m., at the same venue.
