Havana, Sep 6 (RHC) The Cuban delegation will try today to add a new title at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, when paratable tenist Yunier Fernandez faces Britain's Robert Davies in the final of the SM1 category.
Fernandez won on Tuesday the first medal of the discipline for the largest of the Antilles in a Paralympics with a 3-1 victory over Britain's Thomas Matthews, bronze medalist in Tokyo 2020, by 11-5, 10-12, 11-4 and 11-9.
Then, he reached the championship with a 3-2 victory over Italy's Federico Falco, with scores of 15-13, 11-6, 4-11, 6-12 and 11-2.
This Friday, the Antillean will have a great opportunity to conquer his first Paralympic title after finishing fifth twice.
At 41 years of age, the Caribbean athlete has the endorsement of being a medalist in all editions of the Parapan American Games since Rio de Janeiro 2007 and twice winner, Lima 2019 and Santiago de Chile 2023.
Today, two other Cuban representatives will also have options to climb the podium: long jumper Felipa Hechavarría, class T46, and Para-swimmer Lorenzo Pérez, if he qualifies for the final of the 400 meters freestyle, category S6.
Perez accumulates four Paralympic medals, one gold (100 in Rio 2016), one silver (50 in London 2012) and two bronze (100 in London 2012 and 400 in Rio 2016), all in the freestyle S6 class.
On Thursday, Cuba won a crown through the stellar runner Omara Durand and a bronze with javelinist Ulicer Aguilera.
Durand triumphed in the 100 meters flat, category T12, her tenth gold in Paralympic events, and Aguilera debuted his record in this great competition with the bronze medal in the F13 class and a personal best and American record of 62.51 meters.
With these two medals, the largest of the Antilles rose to 24th place in the medal list by countries, with four gold, two silver and one bronze.
Brazil leads Latin America's performance by appearing in eighth place with 15 gold medals, 18 runner-up medals and 29 third places, followed by Colombia, ranked 19th (5-6-9). (Source: Prensa Latina)
