Chess Olympiad Budapest 2024

Havana, Sept 18 (JIT) - After Tuesday's general rest date, the Cuban teams face Paraguay, in the men's category, and Turkmenistan, in the women's category, on Wednesday in the continuation of the World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, which entered its final stretch with the seventh of the 11 scheduled rounds.

The men, who occupy the 48th place in the open segment with eight units, will depend again on Carlos Daniel Albornoz on the first table as opponent Axel Bachmann in what could be one of the most complicated duels.

The Camagüey-born Albornoz has 3.5 points out of a possible five -including a win over Spain's Alexei Shirov and a draw against Anish Giri of the Netherlands- and is one of the most outstanding players in the Cuban squad.

Omar Almeida also stands out with four wins in 5 games and this Wednesday he will play against Antonio Almiron.

Among women, the duel against Turkmenistan seems affordable for a collective triumph.

Four series won and two lost leave the Cubans with eight points and in 39th place in the ranking.

The Indian teams lead both sections with perfect performances of 12 units, and on Wednesday they will be the opponents of China in the open segment and Georgia in the women's category.
