Capablanca in Memoriam Chess Tournament
Cuba, Jan 7 (PL) The halls of the Solymar-Arenas Blancas and Meliá Internacional hotels, in the Cuban resort city of Varadero, will host the Capablanca In Memoriam chess tournament from May 9 to 19.
According to the digital sports weekly Jit, after eight years in its usual venues in Havana, mainly in the Habana Libre Hotel, the Capablanca In Memoriam chess tournament will return to Varadero in 2025.
National chess commissioner Carlos Rivero commented that as is tradition, the Elite group will gather the highest level players, repeating the attractive format of six contestants, who will play all against all in a double round-robin format.
As usual, the presence of outstanding foreign players is expected, while Cuba's stellar grandmasters Carlos Daniel Albornoz and Luis Ernesto Quesada, currently the best chess players on the island, have already confirmed their participation, he said.
Rivero detailed that there will also be activity in the open section, which will include many talents and other members of the national pre-selection, for example, in the children's category, the Buscando a Capablanca tournament will bring together exponents of the U-8, U-10, U-12, U-14, and U-16 categories.
In this edition, according to the commissioner, there will also be a Veterans-Senior tournament for those over 60 years of age, and there will be the novelty in the calendar of holding, in parallel, the Central American and Caribbean Tournament for those under 20 years of age, which for the first time will be hosted by Cuba and will welcome contestants regardless of gender.
