Cuban Grand Prix Tour

Havana, Jan 9 (JIT) - Separate tournaments for men and women, scheduled for January 17, will define the champions of the Cuban Grand Prix Chess Tour 2024.

The circuit had five phases and the leaders of each one will now animate the decisive tournaments, which will have the participation of some guest players.

The men's section will have eight contestants and four candidates for the throne. In both jousts, the system of all against all will prevail with Blitz games (5 minutes, plus 3 seconds of increment after each move).

The organizers confirmed to JIT that thanks to their successes in the previous rounds, Carlos Daniel Albornoz from Camagüey, Alain Otero, Daniel Hidalgo, and Alejandro Yanes from the capital city, as well as Michel Alejandro Díaz from Las Tunas, have reserved a place in the finals.

In the women's segment, only three players achieved partial victories, because Yerisbel Miranda, from Pinar del Río, won on more than one occasion. That is why the defining match will involve four women who will face each other in the same format but in a double round-robin format.

The final tournaments will be held at the Girasol Hotel, in the capital. They will coincide with the 45th anniversary of the officialization of the Cuban Chess Federation as the governing entity of the Game of Science on the island.

Each stage of the Cuban Grand Prix Tour 2024 was held as an independent tournament: one of rapid games and another of Blitz. The sum of the results in each one defined the final order of the respective stops.

The initiative brought together players from almost all the provinces and provided a chance not only for the established figures, as it also opened spaces for players in the school and youth categories.
