Havana, Mar 12 (RHC) - The opening day of the 41st edition of the Manuel Suárez in Memoriam Weightlifting Tournament was marked by the return to the international platforms of Cuban Ludia Montero.

The Cuban starred in an excellent performance in her 48 kilograms division by lifting in the snatch, 71, 77, and 80 kilograms. She failed in the first attempt at the 90 kilograms, but then made valid attempts at the same weight of 90 and 95 kilograms.

Ludia worked for a total score of 175 kg to become champion of the tournament that Havana will host until March 15.

The Manuel Suárez is taking place simultaneously with the continental youth championship, a qualifying event for the Junior Pan American Games of Asunción 2025.

In the fight, the battles between the 48 kg girls and the 60 kg boys were completed on Tuesday.

Among the women, Cuban Thalia Castillo won three bronze medals after lifting 62 kilograms in the snatch, 86 in the pull-up, 86 in the push-up, and 148 kilograms in the total.

The division was dominated by Venezuela's Kerlys Montilla, who lifted 74 kg in the first regulatory movement, 93 kg in her second exercise and accumulated 167 kg in the total. She was followed on the podium by Mexico's Kenia May (71kg- 90kg- 161kg).

Another good news for Cuba came from Yuliesky Martínez, who won a silver medal in the men's 60 kg in the snatch and another in the biathlon.

For the second day of activities, the women's 58 and 63 kg divisions are scheduled to compete for the silver medals. The men's 71 and 79 kg, are also summoned.
