Brasilia, August 3 (RHC)-- The rapporteur of Brazil’s special Senate committee on impeachment, Antonio Anastasia, delivered the recommendations from his report on Tuesday over whether to move forward with an impeachment trial against suspended president Dilma Rousseff.
Brazilian lawmakers with the impeachment committee will convene later this week to vote on whether to proceed with the impeachment charges.
Anastasia, a senator with the conservative Brazilian Social Democracy Party and a fierce critic of suspended President Dilma Rousseff, argued in favor of impeachment. The report from Anastasia, who supported the parliamentary coup against Rousseff, is based on witness testimony, review of prosecutors' investigation into allegations of corruption, and arguments made by her defense attorneys.
Dilma Rousseff's suspension followed unsubstantiated accusations that she misued government accounts in 2014 for influence-peddling, financing public expenditures in an attempt to win votes ahead of her successful re-election campaign. None of the allegations have been supported with evidence and the accusations against Dilma are politically motivated.
