Mexico City, February 26 (RHC) -- Federal courts in Mexico Tuesday formally charged Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the captured leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel, with organized crime and drug trafficking.

A statement issued by the third district court said Guzman, who was arrested over the weekend after escaping 13 years ago from a maximum-security prison in western Jalisco state, has three working days to appeal the charges.

The 56-year-old drug kingpin may be charged with additional crimes, including money laundering and possession of military weapons, prosecutors said.

'El Chapo,' or 'Shorty,' was arrested Saturday in Mexico's northwest resort of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, the main bastion of the cartel.
