At least 26 femicides in Argentina so far this year

Buenos Aires, February 3 (RHC)-- In Argentina during the month of January, which has just ended, there were a total of at least 26 femicides and another 36 attempted murders, according to data reported by the organization Mumalá-Mujeres de la Matria Latinoamericana, based in Buenos Aires.

According to the non-profit organization, between January 1st and the 31st, there was an average of one femicide committed in Argentina every 27 hours.  The women's defense group said that cases of the murdered women are in the investigation stage, awaiting autopsies or complementary investigations, but few have been completely resolved.

The same report also reveals that 27 children and adolescents lost their mothers as a result of these events, and another 36 women were victims of attempted femicides.  The breakdown of the data indicated that in 59 percent of the cases, the femicides were committed by partners, ex-partners or family members; and another 29 percent by men known to the victims or members of their intimate circles.

Mumalá-Mujeres de la Matria Latinoamericana reveals in its report that 63 percent of the murders took place in the women's homes, where they lived alone or with their partners; 17 percent on public streets, 8 percent in the victims' workplaces and the remaining four percent in the homes where the murderers live.
