Santiago de Chile, February 19 (RHC)-- The Communist Party of Chile has reported on its official Twitter account that party representatives, deputies and other personalities are demanding that Chilean President Sebastián Piñera dissolve the police force -- the Carabineros -- and create a new police institution.

The request was made through a letter addressed to the president, delivered in the palace of La Moneda, where relatives of the prisoners of the popular revolt of October 2019, parliamentarians, social leaders, trade unionists and others attended.

The text "demands a profound revision of the doctrines that guide the origin and actions of the police institutions and the Armed Forces, being urgent to adapt the exercise of their duties in accordance with international standards in democracy."

The document also lists the violations carried out by Carabineros, including the violent detention of people after October 18, 2019, who remain in custody for their participation in the demonstrations.

"The situation of these prisoners contrasts violently with the way in which the courts have prosecuted Carabineros for events in which dozens of demonstrators were killed and injured," adds the same, which includes other demands.

The signatories demand justice and reparation for the victims of violence exercised by State agents, and guarantees of non-repetition, as well as to apply urgency to a General Pardon Bill presented to Congress by opposition senators, and not to veto it.

It is necessary to "reform the Organic Law of the Carabineros, ensuring its subordination to civilian power, and to initiate the re-foundation of this institution, with the participation of bodies specialized in security and human rights, civilian representatives and social organizations," states the document.
