Quito, February 19 (RHC)-- The National Electoral Council (CNE) of Ecuador, reported on Friday on its official website that after computing 100 percent of the ballots, the candidate of the Union for Hope (UNES) Andres Arauz is confirmed in first place, while the second place is given to the presidential candidate of the CREO political alliance, Guillermo Lasso.

According to information published by the Ecuadorian CNE, Andres Arauz obtained 32.72 percent of the votes, thus officially occupying the first place in the election.  As Guillermo Lasso is in second place with 19.74 percent of the votes, he will dispute the presidency with Arauz in a runoff election.  In third place appears the representative of the Plurinational Unity Movement Pachakutik, Yaku Perez, with 19.38 percent.

The president of the CNE, Diana Atamaint, previously assured that after the proclamation of the electoral results of the first round, the candidates or political organizations will be able to file the legal actions established by law, if they are not satisfied.

The winner of the second electoral round between Arauz and Lasso, scheduled for April 11th according to the official electoral calendar, will assume the presidency of Ecuador next May 24th for the period between 2021 and 2025.

The first round of elections on February 7th was characterized by a high citizen participation, despite the context of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the delays in the opening and operation of the polling stations which generated long lines of voters.
