Argentina pays tribute to Grandmothers and Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo
Buenos Aires, March 24 (RHC)-- Argentinean President Alberto Fernandez honored the Grandmothers and Mothers of Plaza de Mayo (las Abuelas y Madres de Plaza de Mayo) for their 45 years of struggle in defense of human rights. The ceremony was held in the context of the Day of Memory, Truth and Justice, commemorated on March 24th.
The act of recognition to the admirable women of the social organization that emerged during the last Argentinean civic-military dictatorship that lasted from 1976 to 1983, took place at the Bicentennial Museum of Buenos Aires.
At the ceremony, Alberto Fernandez highlighted the work of Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, saying that "they had the courage that the rest of society did not have, and that is why they are so special, because they dared to do what the rest of society did not."
Motivated by the "model of conduct, struggle and commitment" of the Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, the president granted them the Juana Azurduy Award.
After 45 years of the genocidal civic, military and ecclesiastical coup, the Argentinean teacher and human rights activist and member of the NGO Mothers of Plaza de Mayo Founding Line, Taty Almeida, said at the ceremony: "We are still standing, and we will continue to stand, because we are no longer alone."
