Quito, June 14 (RHC)-- Ecuador's prison authorities confirmed over the weekend a new incident inside the Men's Prison number 2, better known as the Penitenciaría del Litoral located in the city of Guayaquil.

According to information provided by police officers from outside the prison, gunshots were heard in several of the prison's wards.  The National Service of Integral Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders of Ecuador (SNAI) reported that prison and National Police agents entered the interior of the penitentiary in order to regain control of the prison.

The SNAI has not yet provided details on the number of injured or dead as a result of the riot or the intervention of law enforcement agents to restore calm in the Penitenciaría del Litoral.   Incidents have been recurrent in recent years both in the Penitentiary and in Regional Center No. 2. Last February there was a riot that left at least 21 dead.
