Santiago de Chile, June 26 (RHC)-- Followers of the legacy of President Salvador Allende commemorated on Saturday in Chile the 113th anniversary of the birth of the man who gave his life among the ruins of the Moneda Palace on September 11, 1973.

"Don Chicho," as he was known to those closest to him, or Comrade President, as he was called by all the people when he became the first socialist president, dedicated his entire life to social struggles and in favor of the most humble of this South American country.

He was president of the Federation of Students, doctor, deputy and senator of the Republic, Minister of Health, founder and General Secretary of the Socialist Party of Chile, founder and president of the Medical College of Chile, and candidate on four occasions until he won the presidency in 1970 with the Popular Unity.

Many today affirm that his ideas are more present than ever in the Chile, with a powerful mass movement launched on October 18, 2019, and in the profound changes demanded by that "social outburst" -- in the search for a new constitution for the country.

Regarding the historical moment, others bring up that a constant in Allende's thinking and actions was to promote the broadest unity in order to defeat the right wing and transform the country.

They recall that since his first presidential candidacy in the 1950s, he proved to be a promoter of the unity of workers, women, youth and students and their organizations together with the political forces representative of the people.

This Saturday, even though almost all the local press media, of clearly conservative tendency, did not allude to the date, in the social networks thousands remembered the Compañero Presidente under the hashtag #AllendeVive.

Among other tweets, the Communist Party of Chile affirmed: "When the people opened the avenues wide to conquer their right to a new Constitution, Allende was there; in every raised fist, flag and cry of struggle."

From the Socialist Party: "We commemorate this June 26th -- the birthday of the best of our people, our Comrade President Salvador Allende Gossens.  His legacy of consequence and struggle for equality, justice and dignity remains more valid than ever."

For his part, one of the many Internet users who remembered this anniversary, Marco Monsalve, described him simply as: "The only president with brains and heart that we have had in the last 50 years.   Happy Birthday Compañero!"
